The batteries of electric bikes are still relatively weak for now. They are large, bulky, and heavy, providing us with only (on average) 40 to 50 km per 500 Wh. Charging still takes too much time. There are fast chargers, but this affects the lifespan of your battery. At some point, it’s only logical that you’ll have to replace the battery of your e-bike.
When to Replace the Battery?
To know when you should replace the battery of your electric bike, you should look at the capacity. Based on your range, you can determine if the capacity of your battery has decreased. Some bike shops can test the capacity of your battery for you.
There are many tips to help prolong the life of your battery. Read more about how to maintain your battery here.
Under Warranty
If you notice that the capacity is lower than 65 to 70 percent, then it’s time to replace your battery. You can continue riding with this lower capacity without affecting other components. Be sure to check this before your two-year warranty expires. You might still be eligible for a free replacement.
Out of Warranty
If you’re out of warranty, you might be able to wait a bit longer. It all depends on the length of your routes. With only a 30 km range, you’ll barely make it 15 km, just enough to have some charge left for the return trip. If you have a full charge, you’ll go even less far.
Buying a new battery for your electric bike is a choice. Don’t discard the other battery too quickly. You can use it as a backup or as a second battery if your bike allows it. Then, you can recycle it.
We recommend buying a battery from the same brand. If you buy a different brand, make sure they are compatible. The electric motor and battery are closely matched, so there should be no mistakes here.
