Lombardo, an Italian brand renowned for its innovative bicycle designs, recently launched the Mondello 20. This isn’t just any bike; it’s a longtail bicycle equipped with 20-inch fatbike wheels. At Velofollies, we had the opportunity to examine it up close.
These thick tires not only give the bike a rugged appearance but also provide extra volume, making the 20-inch tires suddenly appear much larger.
Longtail with Fatbike Tires
The design of the Mondello is remarkable. With a very low center of gravity, thick tires, and a minimalist look, this bike is a real eye-catcher. The frame is sturdy and made from a single piece, contributing to a comfortable riding experience. The battery is integrated, but there is also the option to add extra batteries as an accessory or option.
What stands out about the Mondello 20 is the double kickstand. At first glance, this seems like a very convenient addition to the longtail bike.
The price of 2400 euros is also very attractive, partly thanks to the Bafang rear wheel motor and the use of a chain with derailleur.
As a result, you don’t have the luxury of a belt drive or hub gears, and there is also no mid-motor. This is not a necessity on a longtail bike, but it can be useful if you have to cycle uphill a lot or carry extra weight.
Italian Design
The handlebar design of the Mondello 20 is also unique and reminiscent of a BMX. We saw this handlebar design again at Velofollies, on the MOTO2 by GASGAS. The front fender and the suspension fork contribute to extra riding comfort, especially on the bumpy Belgian roads. Additionally, the fat tires help absorb shocks.
We’re curious to see how this bike would perform in one of our test rides. And what we would compare it to, longtail bikes or fatbikes.
One thing is certain: the front fender will just not catch enough water on our rainy Belgian days. But despite this minor drawback, the Lombardo Mondello 20 seems like a very interesting bike for the true bike enthusiast.
We found this electric longtail with fatbike wheels at DeScheemaeker’s booth. Right next to the KADe from the Australian brand Reid.
