The introduction of the Carrie by Riese & Müller marks a significant evolution in the cargo bike market. Just as the automotive industry has developed various segments over the years – from compact city cars to SUVs and luxury sedans – we now see a similar trend in the world of cargo bikes.
The Carrie represents a new segment in this market: the compact cargo bike. Similar to city cars designed to maneuver easily in busy urban streets, the Carrie is designed to be flexible and agile, even in the busiest urban environments. With its compact size and flexible storage options, the Carrie is ideal for city dwellers who have a lot to transport but limited storage space.
Measuring 2 meters and 9 centimeters in length, this compact long john cargo bike is only slightly longer than a standard bicycle but can carry an impressive amount of cargo.
Innovative Cargo Designs
The Carrie is available with two box variants: the Basic Box and the Flex Box. The Basic Box, made of sturdy polypropylene plastic, can accommodate a standard Eurobox measuring 30 x 40 cm. On the other hand, the Flex Box can be opened and closed and, when opened, can carry larger items or even up to two children.
Compact yet Powerful Cargo Bike
The Carrie is equipped with the powerful and quiet Bosch Performance Line motor, powered by a 545 Wh PowerPack battery. This battery can be upgraded to 725 Wh for even greater range if needed. The Carrie is available with two gearing options: the Touring, a 10-speed derailleur gear, and the Vario, a continuously variable Enviolo hub gear.
The weight of the Carrie starts at 34 kg, including the battery. This is an average weight for a cargo bike with a long john design. However, thanks to the powerful Bosch Performance Line motor, the Carrie is excellently equipped for hilly terrain, even when the bike is fully loaded.
Competition (and Affirmation) for Muli
With the introduction of the Carrie, Riese & Müller confirms the vision of Muli, which previously brought a folding cargo bike to the market. Although the Carrie is not foldable, its arrival shows that there is room for innovation and competition in the market for compact cargo bikes.
In the future, we can expect this segment of compact cargo bikes to continue growing. Just as car manufacturers are introducing more crossover SUVs to the market, we will likely see more cargo bike manufacturers introducing compact models. This will provide consumers with more choices and diversify the cargo bike market as a whole.
