The world of electric folding bikes is constantly evolving, with new models and innovations hitting the market regularly. One of the most exciting releases is the Ahooga Max, a premium electric folding bike from the Brussels-based brand Ahooga.
We were invited to the launch conference of Ahooga, where CEO Gokce Dogru and Brussels State Secretary Barbara Trachte unveiled the bike. This latest Ahooga Max is ‘Made in Belgium’, with the bikes being designed and assembled in Belgium at the Brussels facilities.
No Upgrade, but a Premium Version
The Ahooga Max, a product of the Brussels-based brand Ahooga, is a testament to the company’s commitment to enhancing their brand. It’s not just an upgrade of the Ahooga Folding bike; it’s a premium version of it. The Max retains the original identity and design of Ahooga. The unique triangular frame is characteristic of Ahooga.
The Ahooga Max is slightly heavier and sturdier than the Folding bike, with a total weight of 18 kilograms. All components are now integrated, giving the folding bike a sleek and sharp appearance. Despite its lightness, the bike is stable and robust during rides. Ahooga has worked hard to improve riding comfort on Belgian streets, particularly known for their cobblestones, tram rails, and other road interferences such as potholes and sudden irregularities.
Compact city bike that also folds
It quickly became apparent that the Max is not just a folding bike for commuting; it’s a compact city bike that also folds. This is evident from their decision to retain the 20-inch tires, which provide ample grip and ground contact points to function as a true city bike. Once folded, the Max is compact, but still slightly larger and wider than its major competitors.
The riding position on the Max is fairly upright, similar to a Brompton or a traditional city bike. The height of the seat and handlebars can be adjusted, making it a good fit for a wide range of people.
Quality Innovations
The Ahooga Max is a testament to the brand’s commitment to quality. The major upgrades include the switch from rear-wheel to front-wheel motor, the integrated battery, and an improved folding mechanism. These and other changes will be discussed in detail in our review and comprehensive test. We briefly tested the Ahooga Max, and the initial tests were very positive; a full test will follow later.
Unlike their previous designs, which primarily utilized in-house brands, the Max features well-known suppliers and brands. With the Ahooga Max, the brand aims to offer a high-quality bike that can compete with other brands in the higher price segment. Naturally, this translates to a slightly higher purchase price. The Ahooga Max will cost around 3500 euros and is expected to be available by the end of 2023.
