During our recent visit to an electric bike fair, we came across an interesting model: a longtail bike, the KADe by Reid. Reid is an Australian brand offering an electric longtail with a mid-drive motor and 24-inch wheels. A convenient intermediate option, as we mostly see 20-inch or 26-inch longtails.
An Australian Longtail at the Belgian Velofollies Fair
At first glance, the Reid longtail appears to be a fairly standard design. The frame seems slightly less sturdy and also slightly shorter than what we are used to. The brand focuses on a good price/quality ratio.
The Motor and Other Specifications
Reid uses a motor from a brand unfamiliar to us, Ananda. This mid-drive motor has a power of 48 volts and 250 watts. Unfortunately, little is known about the number of newton meters; given the price segment, we suspect it to be between 60 and 75.
The bike uses a chain and derailleur system and has a relatively simple display.
Price and Conclusion
With a price tag of around 4,000 euros, the Reed longtail is approximately 1,000 euros cheaper than our average longtail bike. However, it is still 1,200 euros more expensive than a Belgian Swyff Cargo LT. The choice seems straightforward.
For now, we prefer Belgian brands that offer more quality within this price range. Customer service and after-sales service are also important factors when purchasing an e-bike.
That being said, the Reid is an interesting option for those looking for a longtail bike with a slightly smaller budget. Of course, we need to thoroughly review and test it before we can make any judgments.
