In the rapidly evolving e-bike industry, Fazua, a German manufacturer, has become a pioneer. Known for their lightweight and efficient e-bike motors, Fazua introduced the Ride 60 in 2022. While it has been around for some time, it is only now becoming mainstream due to adoption by many major brands.

The Ride 60 โ€“ Lightweight and Integrated

The Fazua Ride 60 is more than just an upgrade from the previous Ride 50 model; it’s a revolution. In contrast to the previous Ride 50, it is not necessarily lighter but has almost 200 watt-hours more power.
However, the most significant change is that, unlike the Ride 50, the Ride 60 is permanently integrated into the frame of the e-bike. This design change affects both the aesthetics and functionality of e-bikes, giving them a sleeker look and a safer motor placement.

The Motor and Gearbox

The heart of the Ride 60 is the motor and gearbox, collectively known as the Drive Unit. Weighing just 1.96 kilograms, it is one of the lightest on the market, making it an excellent choice for riders who value agility and speed (think road bikes or mountain bikes).
The motor’s torque has been increased from 58 Newton meters on the Ride 50 to 60 Newton meters on the Ride 60. This increase in torque means that riders can expect a more responsive and powerful performance, especially when climbing hills or accelerating.

The Associated Battery

The Ride 60 is powered by the new Energy 430 battery. With a capacity of 430 watt-hours, it is designed to meet the increased energy demands of the system.

The battery comes in two versions: one that is removable and one that is permanently installed. This flexibility enables e-bike manufacturers to design bikes that cater to different rider preferences.

For city bikes, the removable version might be better for easy charging, while mountain bikers might opt for the permanently installed version for added durability.

The Control Units

The Ride 60 features an LED Hub integrated into the top tube, displaying the charging status and assistance mode. There is also a Ring Control on the handlebar, used to activate the drive, turn the lights on and off, operate the walking assist, and change the riding modes.

The Control Hub, a third control unit, combines the functionalities of both the LED Hub and the Ring Control. This separation of control and display units ensures a more intuitive and safer riding experience, as riders can easily switch modes without having to take their hands off the handlebars.

The Ride 60 in the Market

The Ride 60 has been adopted by major bike brands such as Riese & Mรผller and Canyon, indicating its acceptance in the industry. It is ideal for a range of e-bikes, from e-city bikes to e-gravel bikes, e-road bikes, and e-mountain bikes. This broad applicability is evidence of the versatility of the Ride 60.

It has two major advantages. The design of the bike is improved because the motor is no longer visible. Additionally, hybrid bikes are easier for city riders, and sporty e-bikes benefit from the extra light weight.

For an e-road bike, you still want the lightest bike possible. A heavy battery and motor make racing difficult. With these lightweight designs, you make it easier on yourself. Moreover, the integrated design provides better weight distribution, resulting in excellent stability, which is especially beneficial for sporty E-MTBs.

The Lightest Electric Motors

The Fazua Ride 60 represents a significant leap forward in the design of e-bike motors. Its lightweight design, customized power, and integrated control units make it an excellent choice for e-bike manufacturers and riders.

Other brands also see the value in this and are now focusing on lighter motors with high torque and pulling power. We see this with Bosch, which is introducing an extra light model called the SX to the market. But other brands are also working on this. These lightweight mid-drive motors offer quality alternatives to rear-wheel motors.
