Dutch (Electric) Bike Brands

Gazelle (Best Dutch Bike Brand)

Gazelle was founded in 1892 by Willem Kรถlling and Rudolf Arentsen and has since become an integral part of the Dutch cycling world. From their headquarters in Dieren, Gelderland, they produce approximately 275,000 bikes annually.
Their electric bikes, in particular, are extremely popular. The Grenoble, Paris, Bloom (family bike), and Orange are some of their well-known models. In addition to e-bikes, Gazelle also offers a wide range of quality regular bikes. With the Gazelle Nยฐ1, they are now venturing into the market of class 3 bikes, but face tough competition from Belgian S-pedelec brands.

Although there’s plenty of choice in the Netherlands, Gazelle seems to be the best Dutch bike brand at the moment. Their history, experience, and new innovations demonstrate that they know what they’re doing. Additionally, most models fall into a pleasant price range, making it affordable for most people.

Amslod

Founded in 2015, Amslod has rapidly grown as a Dutch e-bike brand. They follow a similar strategy to Stella by offering Test Centers, which they call “Experience Centers.” They provide home service for maintenance and repairs. Additionally, they offer affordable e-bikes with distinctive designs and use Bafang motors for pedal assistance.

Santos Bikes

Santos Bikes is a Dutch bicycle brand, founded in 1997 by cycling enthusiast Robbert Rutgrink. The company started in a shed in Lisse and has grown into a specialist where a team of about 20 cycling enthusiasts works daily on the bicycle dreams of their customers.

Santos is committed to quality and is increasingly developing its own components, with its own R&D department where ‘crazy bike makers’ come up with and test new ideas. Each mechanic builds a bicycle as a whole on their own workbench, just as the company startedโ€‹โ€‹.

Santos has a rich history of innovation and adapting to the needs of cyclists. The concept of the Custombuilt bike, where the customer’s preferences are first asked before building the bike, is fundamental to the company’s philosophy. This makes Santos flexible and capable of realizing the best possible bicycle composition for each individual customerโ€‹โ€‹.

Recent news updates from Santos include the introduction of the Adventure Cage, a wide version of the Santos Hold-all designed for attachment to the front fork, ideal for bikepackers, and a new lightweight yet extremely sturdy rear carrier, designed by Santos and manufactured in the Netherlands.

At Velofollies, we saw Santos’ police bike on display right next to their new highly innovative B2B cargo bike with ultra-light cargo design.

Cortina

Founded in 1955, Cortina has gained popularity in recent years. They are known for producing robust and stylish transport bikes and mother bikes, offering both regular bicycles and e-bikes. VanMoof

VanMoof was founded in 2009 (and declared bankrupt in 2023) by brothers Ties and Taco Carlier, with the aim of designing the ideal city bike. They focus on creating minimalist, sustainable, and stylish city bikes.

VanMoof bicycles are recognizable by their distinctive thick top tube and hidden integrated components. They develop electric bikes for the international market, including the Netherlands and Belgium.

Their latest series, the S5 and A5, features a redesigned system, quieter motors, longer battery life, improved anti-theft technology, and easier maintenance. Good ideas, but unfortunately, there were too many issues with this model. Eventually, VanMoof was declared bankrupt and acquired by the British Lavoie.

Veloretti

We’re fans of the new Veloretti Ace, which also scores in our list of E-city bikes. Affordable yet beautiful and reasonably good quality. Veloretti was/is Dutch. Founded in Amsterdam in 2012 with the mission to deliver quality at a fair price.
Recently, they became part of the Pon.Bike group, and their bicycles are sold worldwide. It remains a ‘designed in Amsterdam, handmade in Europe’ story. This group also includes other brands such as Kalkhoff, Urban Arrow, Cannondale, Gazelle, …

VanDijck

VanDijck is a brand that stands for elegance and quality. Their inspiration can be found in the 17th-century Flemish baroque painter Anthony Van Dyck, whose work is known for its refinement and elegance. These qualities are reflected in the design and construction of VanDijck e-bikes. The bicycles are carefully assembled and inspected in their own workshop in Roosendaal, Netherlandsโ€‹โ€‹.

VanDijck is relatively new in the bicycle market, active since 2017, and offers a price range of โ‚ฌ1,399 to โ‚ฌ3,199. With approximately 25 different e-bike models, they aim to appeal to a broad audience.

Dutch Cargo Bike Brands

Urban arrow (Best Dutch cargo bike)

Urban Arrow wants to give the streets back to the people and make city transport comfortable, effortless, and fast. Their cargo bikes have spacious cargo areas, making it possible to transport goods or children. The electric pedal assistance of Urban Arrow bikes makes pedaling almost effortless, even uphill or against the wind.

In our opinion, Urban Arrow is still the best Dutch bike brand for cargo bikes. They have the experience, their product and accompanying reviews speak volumes. The Urban Arrow is not the very best cargo bike, but it has the best price / quality ratio.

Carqon

Young, hip, and new. Carqon is a brand that focuses on the popular cargo bikes. Similar to Urban Arrow but with a slightly more focus on safety and quality. The Carqon cargo bikes are of high quality with lots of user-friendliness and riding comfort.

Babboe

Babboe is a Dutch cargo bike brand known for its affordable and family-friendly designs.
They offer a wide range of cargo bikes, including the City, Curve, Dog, Carve, Mini, and Max models.

In early 2024, some Babboe models were taken out of sale after questions about the strength of the frame and the safety of the cargo bikes as a result.

Bakfiets.nl

Bakfiets.nl was founded when Maarten van Andel became a parent and noticed the limitations of existing cargo bikes. He designed the ultimate cargo bike called the Cargobike. A few years ago, this was an innovation.

Meanwhile, we see a lot of new models, and the Bakfiets.nl looks a bit outdated. Nevertheless, it remains an excellent simple and cheap cargo bike for those who don’t want anything too special.

Vogue cargo bikes

Cargo bikes from Vogue are theoretically Dutch, although they are purchased in Asia and resold here without any modifications. Nevertheless, Vogue is a Dutch brand, which earns it a place in this list of Dutch bike brands.
