Belgium has always had a penchant for bicycles, and this passion has now taken a new turn with the emergence of speed pedelecs. These high-quality electric bikes, capable of reaching speeds of up to 45 km/h, have quickly become popular for commuting and recreational use. In this article, we focus on Belgian speed pedelec brands that play a significant role in this growing market.

Belgian Speed Pedelec Brands

Ellio

Ellio was the first to enter the Belgian market. The Ellio Original has been around for a while, but has yet to reach its full potential. The design of the low compact speed pedelec differs from the popular Stromer, which led to some hesitation. The Ellio Original was previously known as the Ahooga Speed, a collaboration with another Belgian bicycle brand.

Fortunately, they didn’t stand still. Ellio is a true pioneer in making Speed Pedelecs and does not see them as fast E-bikes but as a separate category that leans closer to the electric moped. Their brushless motor is of incredibly high quality and lasts much longer than a Bosch or Shimano motor.

At Eurobike 2023 in Germany, Ellio unveiled their latest speed pedelec. The Ellio Max is their second design after the first Ellio Original. This time they are opting for a speed pedelec with 27.5-inch wheels to compete with other brands and cater to consumer preferences.

A good choice, although we are also fans of the Ellio Original with a lower center of gravity. We have also had the opportunity to fully test the Ellio Max. You can find our Ellio Max review here.

In the near future, they will also introduce a fully suspended electric longtail speed pedelec, the Ellio Marty. We are already looking forward to the test ride and the accompanying review.

Future of Belgian Speed Pedelecs

We immediately notice that several brands are emerging as Belgian speed pedelec brands. The fact that production remains in Belgium and the components (as much as possible) come from Europe is good for quality and logistics.

As a result, the bikes will usually belong to the highest price segment – premium speed pedelecs – because we cannot compete with the cheap brands here. In our comparison of the best Class 3 ebikes of 2024, we also take these Belgian brands into account.ย This means that the future of speed pedelecs looks bright in Belgium.

Look at Germany, known for its build quality and high-tech devices. We can learn from this and take a new path. Since the advent of the electric bike, there have been many new Belgian bicycle brands, and now also Belgian speed pedelec brands.
