The 9 best electric fatbikes

The best mopeds with extra wide fat tires for snow, sand or mud

by Dr. Watts'on
Published: Last Updated on 31 minutes read

In this article, we are looking for the best electric fat bikes. Originally designed for snow and sand, electric fat bikes have become increasingly popular. While they were initially seen as a small trend, they are now finding their place in the market, particularly as electric mopeds. They offer extra comfort and reduced need for suspension. For 16-year-old youths, fat bikes are a convenient alternative to the previously popular boosters, which have disappeared from the scene.

Fat bikes are characterized by their wide tires. True fat bikers consider a bike to be a fat bike when the tires are at least 4 inches wide. The size of the bike can vary, with some having 20-inch wheels and others larger. They come in various styles such as mountain bikes, folding bikes, city bikes, and chopper bikes.

Choosing a fat bike is a matter of design. Not every bike can accommodate the wide tires; the frame and fork need to be specially adapted. Many people expect fat bikes to have a throttle, as they resemble mopeds so much. However, currently, this is not allowed in Belgium and the Netherlands.

Our selection of e-fatbikes for 2024

Our selection is based on extensive research. We strive to test as many bikes as possible but may not have had hands-on experience with all models. At the bottom of the article, you’ll find a detailed comparison based on individual elements.

The choice remains yours; make sure to look and compare before making a purchase.

Fastest electric fatbike of 2024

Many people are searching for the fastest electric fatbike. Unfortunately, in Europe, it’s prohibited; e-fatbikes must be limited to 250W and 25 km/h. This is not the case in the US. The electric fatbikes on our list (EU spec) can handle speeds of 35 to 45 km/h but are restricted accordingly.

So, what is the fastest electric fatbike? If you can access one of the US-spec models or remove the limitation (note: only legal on private property), then the Super73-RX or the Phatfour is the fastest. The GASGAS MOTO2 and APE Ryder can also achieve these high speeds.

Increasing the speed is not allowed… just like it wasn’t allowed with boosters… but there’s always a high demand for it. Don’t do it!

Best electric fatbike: Ruff Cycles Lilโ€™ Buddy

Ruff Cycles Lil' Buddy Our choice for the best electric fat bike

The advantages

  • All high-quality components
  • Electric BMX fatbike design
  • Riding comfort & agility
  • Steel frame
  • Bosch Mid-drive motor
  • Many accessories (frame bags)

The disadvantages

  • More expensive
  • No suspension
  • No automatic gear shifting, although the derailleur is of good quality.

When we say “best,” we primarily consider the quality of the bike, riding comfort, and design. The Ruff Cycles Lilโ€™ Buddy not only looks cool, but it’s also the only (real) fatbike with a Bosch mid-drive motor.

The minimalist design resembles that of a motocross bike, which is quite unique. The BMX handlebar and wide tires complete the look. Think about it, a safe, high-quality fatbike with a retro look that could convince a nostalgic dad to gift his 16-year-old son (or daughter) a fatbike.

To reduce the price, Ruff Cycles has switched to the slightly weaker (40 nm) Bosch Active Line motor. The price is now 2999 euros. You can choose from many colors. Additionally, there are battery options available, either 300wh or 500wh, to further adjust the price.

The significant advantage of the Bosch motor is that the assistance is perfectly matched to your pedaling. You may not be the fastest, as rear-wheel motors have the advantage there. However, uphill, you will have sufficient support compared to quick starters.

It’s a fatbike with a steel frame. Strong and durable. The motor is also of high quality. The Shimano hydraulic disc brakes (180 mm) provide reliable stopping power. It’s a high-quality electric fatbike that you can rely on. However, it doesn’t come with automatic gearing. With the 7-speed Shimano, you get quality but not as many gears.

The only drawback is the price; you can purchase the Lilโ€™ Buddy for 2999 euros. If you’re going for long distances, some comfort is lacking. The tires absorb many shocks, and while the steel frame provides more riding comfort, having suspension in the fork or frame would be better.

E-fatbike for girls: Ruff Cycles Lilโ€™ Missy

Electric fat bike for girls

Since it’s the same bike, there are no advantages or disadvantages to mention. The only difference lies in the design, with the Missy featuring a lower step-through frame. While the Lil’ Buddy isn’t the tallest, that type of step-over (straight top tube) might be too high for some.

An electric fatbike for girls… can we still say that? Ruff Cycles certainly thinks so; the name Missy is clearly aimed at youths around the age of 16, and the name indicates that it’s for girls. The Lil’ Buddy, on the other hand, targets 16-year-old boys who want a cool electric fatbike.

Fastest fatbike: Phatfour FLX

Phatfour fat bike with fastest acceleration

The advantages

  • Steel/aluminum frame
  • Powerful Bafang rear-wheel motor
  • Comfortable riding position and spacious saddle, fatbike for two persons
  • Direct Drive System simplifies riding
  • Suspension fork for extra comfort
  • Robust and durable steel/aluminum frame
  • Powerful 750 Wh battery

The disadvantages

  • More expensive

The Phatfour FLX Fatbike stands out with its powerful Bafang GO62 rear-wheel motor, delivering 80 Nm of torque for smooth and powerful assistance. This bike is made in the Netherlands, ensuring that you’re buying locally.

If you’re wondering whether you can do wheelies with the fatbike, the answer is yes, you can with most bikes in this list. However, it’s not possible with mid-drive motors.

You don’t actually need a lot of Nm (Newton meters). This mainly indicates that you’ll accelerate quickly with the Phatfour fatbike. The FLX weighs around 35 kg.

The use of a Direct Drive System means that only one gear is needed, which contributes to the simplicity of use. Adding a suspension fork increases riding comfort by smoothly absorbing road irregularities. The strong and durable steel frame gives the bike a robust appearance and ensures long-term durability.

Comfort is further enhanced by the comfortable riding position and spacious saddle, which even accommodates two people. This makes the FLX extremely suitable for long rides. Phatfour clearly prioritizes riding comfort.

There are few real downsides, except that you’ll pay a bit more compared to cheaper models. Additionally, Phatfour’s direct competitors also offer remarkable fatbikes.

Specifications of the Phatfour FLX

  • Motor: Bafang G062 (80 Nm) 250 Watt rear-wheel motor
  • Battery: 500 Wh, removable, option for 750 Wh
  • Suspension: Suspension fork
  • Brakes: Hydraulic Shimano disc brakes
  • Gear system: Direct Drive System (1 gear)
  • Frame material: Steel
  • Price: โ‚ฌ2,299
  • Wheel size: Fatbike specific
  • Tire size and brand: Not specified, fatbike tires for extra grip and comfort

The Phatfour FLX Fatbike offers an excellent combination of power, comfort, and durability, making it an excellent choice for both daily commuting and recreational rides. With a few minor improvements, it remains one of the most attractive options in its price range.

Good affordable fatbike: Super73 ZG

Cheap Super73 e-fatbike

The advantages

  • Sleek cruiser-style design with a long banana seat
  • Accessible to all rider profiles and street legal in Europe
  • Despite being an entry-level model, it delivers good performance
  • Wide range of colors
  • Super73 design

The disadvantages

  • Basic motor and battery
  • No features for additional riding comfort

The SUPER73-ZG is an affordable electric fatbike priced under 1000 euros. There’s nothing particularly special about it, but its design is sleek and stands out with its cruiser style.

With a range of available colors, the ZG offers a personal touch for every rider. Designed with accessibility and ease of use in mind, it’s an excellent choice for anyone seeking an electric bike with a distinct style for urban adventures.

The 250W motor and built-in battery provide a solid foundation for daily rides within city limits, with a limited range of 20-32 km that will satisfy most urban commuters. The steel frame contributes to the bike’s robustness while also enhancing riding comfort and durability.

Although the SUPER73-ZG offers many advantages in terms of design and accessibility, it’s essential to consider its limitations. The range may be on the lower side for some users. Additionally, without suspension, shorter rides might not be as comfortable.

Despite these limitations, the SUPER73-ZG remains an attractive option for city dwellers looking for a cheaper fatbike that combines style, comfort, and affordability. Below the 1000 euro mark, there are some fatbikes available, all from unknown brands (or brandless) from China.

Off-road Cross fatbike: Super73-RX

Super73 RX fatbike off-road cross

The advantages

  • Powerful motor and battery with high acceleration.
  • Adjustable frame for different rider heights.
  • Off-road capability and riding comfort due to the suspended frame and fork.
  • Long battery life up to 50-60 km on a single charge.
  • Excellent brakes (4 piston) and adjustable rear suspension for stability.
  • Equipped with headlight, taillight, horn, and shock absorption.
  • High quality

The disadvantages

  • Most expensive electric fatbike in this list
  • No automatic gear shifting, although the derailleur is of good quality.
  • For off-road use, stronger lighting could be installed.
  • Heavier than average (36.3 kg)

The Super73-RX isn’t just the most expensive electric fatbike; it’s the only one truly suitable for off-road adventures. Fully suspended fatbikes are not uncommon, but Super73’s emphasis on top-quality components sets it apart. Resembling a cross derby, this fatbike is sure to impress even the most skeptical dads.

Ideal for beach rides, dune exploration, or simply tackling dirt roads and mud, this isn’t just an e-bike; it’s a statement. Sixteen-year-olds might find their new school commute vehicle in this fatbike.

The Super73-RX boasts a large battery (960 Wh – 80 km range) to keep its powerful motor running for extended periods. In mud, this rear-wheel motor might be overpowering, but on solid ground, it delivers exceptional acceleration. The Tektro Dorado brakes, featuring 4 pistons, are a rarity on fatbikes, but they come at a cost; the RX is priced at 5000 euros.

The adjustable frame accommodates riders of various heights, while the advanced braking and suspension systems ensure a safe and comfortable ride, even on rough terrain. The suspension can also be fine-tuned to suit individual preferences.

The choice of aluminum for the frame brings its benefits, minimizing the risk of corrosion or rust. Weighing 36.3 kg, it can handle riders up to 150 kg (including the bike’s weight).

The high price and physical size may deter some potential buyers. Thankfully, Super73 offers other models, albeit less equipped, priced at just 1000 euros.

Specifications:

  • Motor: Super73 Moto 250 Watt
  • Battery: Super73 battery 960 Wh.
  • Suspension: Fully adjustable front and rear DNM suspension.
  • Brakes: Tektro Dorado 203 mm & 180 mm, 4 pistons.
  • Gear system: 8-speed derailleur
  • Frame Material: Aluminum construction.
  • Price: โ‚ฌ 4999.
  • Wheel size: 20 inches
  • Tire size and brand: 4.5-inch front & 5-inch rear wheels
  • Weight and carrying capacity: Suitable for various riders, with an emphasis on stability and durability.

The Super73-RX is clearly designed with both functionality and style in mind, making it an attractive choice for those seeking a versatile and powerful e-bike.

Street electric fatbike: APE RYDER Bonobo

Ape Ryder Bonobo street fatbike moped

The advantages

  • Powerful 250W motor
  • Long range of 60-85 km
  • Comfortable riding with wide tires and comfortable saddle
  • Convenient extras such as USB charging port and LCD display
  • Suspended frame and fork
  • High carrying capacity, room for two

The disadvantages

  • More expensive
  • Heavier than average (35 kg)

We first encountered the APE RYDER Bonobo at Velofollies. It’s an electric fatbike that utilizes a powerful 250W motor and an impressive 960 Wh battery, ideal for both daily commutes and longer journeys.

Comfort is enhanced by the thick tires and the comfortable saddle, providing a smooth ride on various surfaces. Additionally, the front fork and frame suspension contribute to the riding comfort. We wouldn’t recommend serious off-roading; this is more of an electric street bike/fatbike hybrid.

The addition of a USB charging port and an LCD display enhances user-friendliness, allowing riders to charge their devices and monitor important ride information in real-time. The large headlight is also advantageous; you can navigate roads among cars, feeling more like a scooter than a bike.

The motor of this APE Ryder is actually much more powerful than 250 W but is limited to comply with European regulations. The 5-7 hour charging time might seem lengthy, but it’s standard for anything without a fast-charge feature. You can remove the battery and purchase a second one if you wish to circumvent this.

The weight of 40 kg might make transporting the bike over obstacles or stairs challenging. It’s a very heavy electric fatbike. Good for stability at higher speeds but a bit too heavy for our liking. However, it does have an aluminum frame, which could be lighter compared to steel competitors.

Specifications List

  • Motor: 250W Ape Ryderโ€‹โ€‹.
  • Battery: 48V 20Ah (960Wh) LG cell, providing a range of 60-85 km with a charging time of 6-7 hoursโ€‹โ€‹.
  • Suspension: Front fork suspension and frame suspension
  • Brakes: XOD hydraulic brakes
  • Gear System: Equipped with a SHIMANO 7-speed rear derailleur
  • Frame Material: Aluminumโ€‹โ€‹.
  • Price: โ‚ฌ2,500.00
  • Wheel Size: 20″
  • Tire Size and Brand: 20×4.5″ Kenda fat tires, offering excellent grip and comfort on all terrainsโ€‹โ€‹.
  • Weight: 40 kg
  • Load Capacity: Up to 150 kg, two-person saddle

The APE RYDER Bonobo stands out as a sturdy, comfortable, and practical e-bike, perfect for the Belgian market with its focus on sustainability, comfort, and ease of use. If the price is too high, there are also other APE RYDER models available between 1500 and 2000 euros.
This model is targeting the Belgian market, appealing to young people looking for electric scooters in the form of an electric fatbike. Or adult individuals who don’t want a boring e-bike. Soon, you’ll also start seeing them in bike shops.

Electric Motor Fatbike: GASGAS Moto2

GASGAS Moto2 electric moped fatbike with MotoGP tires

The Benefits

  • Steel frame
  • Extra high load capacity
  • Many options and accessories
  • Good price / quality ratio
  • Belgian manufacturer
  • After-sales service

The Drawbacks

  • More expensive
  • No suspension
  • No automatic gearing, although the derailleur is of good quality.

The GASGAS MOTO2, equipped with a Bafang H550 motor, is renowned for its reliability and performance. The motor delivers 750W and 70Nm of torque, making it suitable for both urban rides and light off-road adventures. To be legal, the EU model is limited to 250W, but you’ll still be able to accelerate very quickly.

The large 672Wh battery ensures a generous range, although specific figures depend on usage conditionsโ€‹โ€‹. This means you’ll easily make it back home because at 33.3 kg, it’s not exactly a hybrid bike.

With a steel frame and rigid steel fork, the MOTO2 prioritizes strength and durability over lightweight agility. This makes it a solid choice for riders seeking an e-bike that can handle daily commutes and occasional off-road excursions.

Its 20โ€ wheels, equipped with fat tires, offer excellent grip and stability on various surfacesโ€‹โ€‹. They also simply look great. We had the chance to see, feel, and test ride this bike at the Velofollies fair in 2024.

The extremely powerful hydraulic disc brakes (4-piston – Tektro Gemini SL), both front and rear, provide strong and responsive stopping capabilities, essential for urban environments and trail riding. The simplicity of the 7-speed Microshift drive system offers sufficient versatility for various terrains without complicating maintenanceโ€‹โ€‹.

The weight of the MOTO2, over 33 kilograms, is higher than that of an electric bike but average for this type of fatbike. They are made to go fast and always be electrically powered. Unfortunately, Europe still holds them back a bit with their 250W limitation. These fatbikes could easily be registered as speed pedelecs.

One size fits all. The strong, rigid steel frame is designed for riders between 160cm and 200 cm. No frame suspension, as the shocks are adequately absorbed by the tires, fork, and frame design.

Specifications

  • Motor: Bafang H550, 750W, 70Nm
  • Battery: Bafang, 672Wh, 48V
  • Suspension: Rigid steel fork
  • Brakes: Tektro Gemini SL, 4-piston hydraulic disc brakes
  • Gear System: Microshift RD-M26S, 7-Speed
  • Frame Material: Steel
  • Price: โ‚ฌ3,299
  • Wheel Size: 20โ€
  • Tire Size and Brand: 102-406, 20x fat tires

This brand will also be familiar to mom or dad. GASGAS is known for their MotoGP sponsorship and participation. This electric fatbike looks more like a motorcycle, a cross but with MotoGP fatbike tires. These slicks are ideal for grip and speed on paved roads.

Best Fatbike with Low Step-Through: Benno – Remi Demi

Remi Demi compact fatbike with luggage rack

The Benefits

  • Powerful Bosch mid-motor
  • Versatile luggage options
  • Solid build quality with steel frame
  • Low step-through
  • High riding comfort

The Drawbacks

  • More expensive
  • No suspension
  • Not a true fatbike with 3.5-inch tires

The Remi Demi is a unique and versatile electric bike that leans towards fatbike designs with its small wheels, thick tires for great maneuverability, and a sturdy, thick frame with a convenient low step-through.

The upright riding position atop a wide saddle offers full control, while the powerful Bosch mid-motor, Shimano Sora 9-speed, and hydraulic disc brakes make it a reliable choice for both fun and heavy-duty tasksโ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹.

The Remi Demi is equipped with a Bosch Performance Line motor offering 65Nm of torque, providing ample power during rides, even on steeper slopesโ€‹โ€‹. With a sturdy steel frame and integrated luggage rack, the bike is built to last and can carry heavy loads, up to a total weight of 180kgโ€‹โ€‹.

Thanks to its massive 4.25″ tires, the bike provides a comfortable ride on various surfaces, from city streets to mild off-road terrain. The tires also offer extra grip and stabilityโ€‹โ€‹.

With a weight around 30kg and due to the drag of the large tires, the Remi Demi is less suitable if you often need to lift or carry your bikeโ€‹โ€‹. However, the weight is lower than other steel fatbikes on our list. And the Remi Demi design is easier to lift.

But although the Remi Demi offers a lot in terms of build quality and versatility, it remains on the pricier side with a price above 3000 euros. This is often the case when opting for a Bosch mid-motor, though you get quality and reliability in return.

Specifications:

  • Motor: Bosch Performance Line, 65Nm
  • Battery: Bosch PowerPack, 400Wh or 500Wh option
  • Suspension: None, but the large tires provide comfort
  • Brakes: Hydraulic disc brakes
  • Gear System: Shimano Sora 9-speed
  • Frame Material: Steel
  • Price: Starting around โ‚ฌ3,399 for the standard version
  • Wheel Size: 20″
  • Tire Size and Brand: 4.25″ Duro

The Remi Demi is a less rugged electric fatbike and targets an older audience aged 30 to 70 looking for a cruiser. Cruising through the city, along the beach, anywhere with these thick tires provides extra cushions for riding comfort.

Electric Longtail Fatbike: Monkeybike MonkeyTail

Monkeytail longtail fatbike steel frame.

The Benefits

  • Steel frame
  • Extra high load capacity
  • Many options and accessories
  • Good price / quality ratio
  • Belgian manufacturer
  • After-sales service

The Drawbacks

  • More expensive than the average fatbike (but cheap for a longtail)

  • Heavier

Electric Motor and Battery

Ruff Cycles Lilโ€™ Buddy and Lilโ€™ Missy. These models are equipped with a Bosch mid-motor. The Bosch Active Line motor delivers 40 Nm of torque, providing smooth and balanced support.

Mid-motors have advantages if your route often goes up or down. Also, riding with weight is easier with a mid-motor. When it comes to the motor, the Remi Demi is the most powerful mid-motor.

The Phatfour FLX fatbike has a powerful Bafang GO62 rear-wheel motor delivering 80 Nm. This means you will be able to accelerate quickly with the Phatfour fatbike. The same goes for the Super73 motor. The motor is powerful, and the large battery (960 Wh) ensures you can ride for a long time.

GASGAS Moto2. This fatbike is equipped with a Bafang H550 motor delivering 750W and 70Nm of torque. This makes it suitable for both city rides and light off-road trips. The Ape Ryder motor is similar but slightly weaker.

Based on motor and battery performance, you can propose the following ranking:

  • Super73-RX
  • Phatfour FLX.
  • GASGAS Moto2

What to Consider When Buying an Electric Fatbike

A fatbike is just like an electric bike. The only difference is the wide tires. This allows you to use the bike for other routes as well. On the beach, through the snow or in the mud, with a fatbike you can do a bit more. Even on the street, riding on wide tires is like riding on clouds.

There are quite a few models available now, from very expensive to reasonably cheap e-fatbikes. If you’re thinking of buying, you should compare first. For this, it’s best to go over the following points:

  • Motor and battery
  • Design and dimensions
  • Budget
  • Tires, brakes, and maintenance

Electric Motor and Battery

Of course, it’s best to choose a motor from reputable brands. Bosch, Shimano, Bafang, AEG, and other brands have quite a bit of experience. They have increasingly more technology and sensors, while house brands are often a bit less sophisticated. If you don’t know the brand, it’s best to pay close attention to the warranty.

In addition to build quality, power is also important. An electric fatbike is intended for all terrains, so you need some power for the difficult routes. With lots of slopes or loose terrain, you need 65 to 85 Nm of power. For flat routes, 50 to 65 is sufficient.

Fatbikes have 4-inch wheels or wider

Design and Dimensions

Are you the right fit for the bike? Belgians (and Dutch people) are slightly taller than the average person. Often we see 190 cm as the maximum suitable height. Of course, you can still ride if you’re taller, although you may be slightly less comfortable. Still something to watch out for when looking at the smaller RadPowers.

Design is also somewhat important. Fatbikes are often bought as toys. A ‘folly’ for dad or mom. They are less serious than, for example, electric mountain bikes and often have a special design. We find cruisers and choppers, for example. Retro bikes are also often found in fatbike versions.

Budget

You have to be able to afford the bike…. Electric bikes are already expensive. If you opt for a fatbike, the price usually goes up a bit more. Fatbikes have a modified frame and fork to accommodate the wide tires easily. This makes the cost higher.

Maintenance

Maintenance comes with a bike. Whether you do it yourself or have it done, it needs to be done, and it costs money. With electric fatbikes, you have the additional maintenance of the electrical components. In addition, you also have to take into account the wide tires. These are not standard tires and cost quite a bit more.

Electric fatbike with thick tires

So far our selection of the best electric fatbikes, or electric mopeds, that’s how we’re going to start distinguishing them.
